Dan Price & Keith Weisz

Amateur Astronomy Observations of Transiting Exo Planets

CLAS member Dan Price has delved into the science of exoplanet detections, and has succeeded in detecting exoplanets around other stars! His work involves stellar photometry (light intensity measurements) of stars known to have exoplanets, which are planets in other solar systems.

One way that astronomers detect exoplanets is by carefully measuring the light intensity of a star over an extended period of time that is equal to or greater than the suspected orbital period of a planet. When the light dims very slightly at periodic intervals, it is evidence that an orbiting exoplanet is passing in front of the star. Careful amateurs have been able to replicate this work with commonly-used astrophotography gear.

By careful calibration of the measurements, Dan has succeeded in detecting and verifying several known exoplanets. He will share his exciting work with us at Monday's meeting.
