Messier 78 (M78) is a bright reflection nebula located in the constellation Orion, about 1,350 light-years from Earth, and is one of the most luminous reflection nebulae in the night sky. Illuminated by the young, hot stars HD 38563A and HD 38563B, the nebula glows with a characteristic bluish light as starlight scatters off surrounding dust grains. Embedded within the cloud are numerous young stellar objects, protostars, and dark dust lanes, indicating ongoing star formation hidden from view in optical wavelengths. Set within the larger Orion Molecular Cloud Complex, M78 provides a vivid glimpse into the early stages of stellar birth and the role of dust in shaping star-forming regions.
