The Wizard Nebula (NGC 7380) is a rich emission nebula and open star cluster located in the constellation Cepheus, approximately 7,000 light-years from Earth. Its whimsical “wizard” shape is sculpted by intense ultraviolet radiation and stellar winds from the young, massive stars of the central open cluster, which ionize the surrounding hydrogen gas and carve intricate ridges, pillars, and dark dust lanes. Ongoing star formation is evident along the nebula’s bright edges, where compressed gas collapses to form new stars. Glowing strongly in hydrogen and oxygen emission, the Wizard Nebula is a striking example of how massive stars actively shape and energize their natal interstellar environment.
