Star - TrES-1, V or Gaia mag 11.4, Approximately 523 light-years (160.0 parsecs).

Telescope - Celestron EdgeHD 11”.

From NASA - “TrES-1 b is a gas giant exoplanet that orbits a K-type star. Its mass is 0.84 Jupiters, it takes 3 days to complete one orbit of its star, and is 0.03925 AU from its star. Its discovery was announced in 2004.”

The Trans-Atlantic Exoplanet Survey, or TrES, used three 4-inch (10 cm) telescopes located at Lowell Observatory, Palomar Observatory, and Teide Observatory to locate exoplanets. It was made using the network of small, relatively inexpensive telescopes designed to look specifically for planets orbiting bright stars using the transit method. The array used 4-inch Schmidt telescopes having CCD cameras and automated search routines. The survey was created by David Charbonneau of the Center for Astrophysics, Timothy Brown of the National Center for Atmospheric Research, and Edward Dunham of Lowell Observatory.

Major Discoveries:

TrES-1 (TrES-1b): Discovered in 2004, a Jupiter-sized planet orbiting a K0V star roughly 512 light-years away in the constellation Lyra.

TrES-2 (TrES-2b): Discovered in 2006, notable as one of the darkest known exoplanets, reflecting less than 1% of starlight, located about 750 light-years away in Draco.

TrES-3 (TrES-3b): Discovered in 2007, a massive hot Jupiter with a very short orbital period of about 1.31 days, located roughly 1,300 light-years away in Hercules.

TrES-4 (TrES-4b): Discovered in 2007, known at the time of its discovery as one of the largest radius exoplanets found, located about 1,400 light-years away in Hercules.

TrES-5 (TrES-5b): Discovered in 2011, a hot Jupiter orbiting a G-type star located approximately 1,100 light-years away in Cygnus.


The TrES survey is no longer operational.
